A corporal in the 2nd Field Artillery Regiment, Scaroni entered the Italian Air Service in March of 1915. After training on Blériots and Caudrons, he joined the 4aSquadriglia as a reconnaissance pilot in September of1915. Promoted to First Lieutenant, he was reassigned to the 43aSquadriglia in January of 1917. Later that year, he served briefly with the 86aSquadriglia before becoming a pursuit pilot with the 76aSquadriglia.

Flying the Nieuport 17, Scaroni scored his first confirmed victory on November 14, 1917, shooting down an enemy two-seater near Colbertaldo. Re-equipped with the Hanriot HD.1, he scored three victories at the battle of Istrana on December 26, 1917 and soon became the highest scoring ace in his squadron. Wounded in action at Monte Tomatico, Scaroni scored his final victory on July 12, 1918, bringing down an Albatros D.III
