Jailler joined the army in 1909, learning to fly on his own during 1911. In 1912, he transferred to the French Air Service, receiving a Pilot's Brevet the following year. When the war began, Jailler was driving a tractor instead of flying a plane. In April of 1915, he was assigned to MS15 but was badly wounded in combat the following month. In November of 1917, Jailler was reassigned to the GDE for the duration of the war.
